Recap

Humbled in Hamble

The Quarrymen entered this season’s FA Vase at the 2nd Round stage after their impressive run to the semi-final last season. Expectations were high and the Corsham faithfully flooded down to the south coast. But 14th-placed Wessex League side Hamble had other ideas.

The Quarrymen started the game brightly and had several chances to take the lead, but they were unable to convert any of them. Hamble opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a superb finish into the top right corner. Corsham levelled the scores in the 27th minute after Dan Demkiv dug out an amazing cross for Niekell Plumber to head home, but the joy was short-lived as Hamble restored their lead just two minutes later through a clever counter-attack.

The home side went 3-1 up in the 37th minute with a goal against the run of play, and Corsham had a load shout for a penalty turned down just before half-time. They went into the break trailing by two goals, and despite starting the second half brightly and pulling a goal back in the 62nd minute through a header from James Rusby, they were unable to find an equalizer. Hamble scored two more goals in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

Overall, it was a disappointing day for Corsham. They started the game well, but their inability to convert chances cost them dearly. This was in contrast to Hamble, who was clinical in front of goal. They took their chances when they came and were able to punish Corsham’s mistakes.

Another key factor in the game was Corsham’s defensive frailties. They conceded some soft goals, particularly the second and third goals. These goals were avoidable, and they proved to be costly.

Despite the defeat, there were some positives for Corsham to take from the game. They showed good character to come back from 3-1 down to make it 3-2, and they created plenty of chances throughout the game. However, they will need to be more clinical in front of goal and tighten up their defence if they want to be successful in their promotion campaign this season.

Congratulations to Hamble FC on their deserved victory. They were the better team on the day, and they deserved to progress to the next round.
