The Quarrymen stand up to Pershore pressure

After a stormy week, this was one of the only games played on grass this weekend but the surface was good at the Community Stadium for a tough encounter for the Quarrymen. With a few key players missing Corsham were fortunate to have the services of Kane Simpson up front and on loan keeper Liam Armstrong from Gloucester, but it was a bit of a change in midfield with both Simon Gilbert and Harrison Lea making the starting lineup.

Corsham flew out of the blocks and Niekell Plummer was unlucky not to open the scoring after 3 minutes as his header crashed against the bar from an Owen Humphries corner. But it didn’t take them long to take the lead, from another corner Harrison Lea made space for himself to shoot a hard and low shot past the Plumbs keeper. Moments later it was almost two when a calamitous mix-up from the home side saw the defender play a back pass with the keeper out of position which went narrowly wide and out for a corner.

The first chance for the home side came from a free kick conceded by Dan Price but Armstrong comfortably saved the direct shoot.
Corsham’s second goal came on 23 minutes as Kane latched onto a long ball from Liam Armstrong and finished in style into the top right-hand bin.

The home side finally found their rhythm and began to take control of the game and it was no surprise when they pulled one back with an excellent finish from outside the box. But a few minutes later Plummer restored the 2-goal advantage, a superb ball from left-back Leon Greenland down the channel released Simpson who unselfishly squared the ball for Neikell to apply the finish, great team goal.

Just as it looked like Corsham would go into the break with a comfortable lead, some poor defending allowed the Worcestershire side to pull back another goal and the thrilling first half finished 2-3.

A much tight second half left the result on a knife edge with both sides putting in 100% to earn the points. Simpson went close again but his shot was well saved. Ethan Hill came on for Harrison Lea and immediately set up Plummer but he miscued his attempt to chip off the advancing keeper.

On 75 minutes James Rusby intercepted a shot pass and appeared to be through on goal but was foal by the Pershore defender, the foul was given but no further action was deemed necessary by the referee.

With 10 minutes remaining the travelling fans had their hearts in their mouths when a scramble in the box saw the Pershore No 7 fire over from close range. But after a few more scares for the away team, the referee blew the full-time whistle and Corsham celebrated a magnificent win on the road. An all-round good performance by the Quarrymen proving they really are ‘made of stone’.
