Young Mangos Picked Off by The Quarrymen
Mangotsfield Utd 1 Corsham Town 2
The Quarrymen were back in action on Bank Holiday Monday and received a huge boost with the return of captain Mark Cooper, Golden Boot winner Neikell Plummer, and creative midfielder Rob Hobbs to the squad for a trip to Cossham Road, the home of Mangotsfield United.
Corsham flew out of the blocks right from the kick-off. They won a throw-in that was launched into the box, and Plumber stylishly hammered home the resulting flick-on. What a start and what a return for Neks!
Mangotsfield responded well after the goal. There was a desperate scramble in the Corsham box, and a half-cleared ball was smashed high and wide by a home midfielder.
This was followed by another half-chance for the home side. The tricky Mango winger gave Rich Dawley the slip down the left, and his cross was nearly turned home by the No. 9.
The home side continued to apply pressure, and Alfie Kelsey had to be at his best to make a superb stop when once again the dangerous No. 9 managed to wrestle his way into the box and force an effort on goal.
Against the run of play, Corsham doubled their lead when a Rusby free kick evaded everyone and bounced over the Mangos’ keeper into the net. This was developing into a proper contest as the Mangos, despite the 2-goal deficit, were far from giving up. They were flying into tackles and picked up the first yellow card of the game.
Corsham’s first booking came in the 37th minute and was very harsh. Jun was adjudged to have barged into the defender, whose reaction seemed worthy of a yellow card itself.
Corsham seemed to have the match under control with a comfortable 2-goal lead, but the Mangos were given a lifeline when Corsham conceded a clumsy penalty due to a mix-up in the box. Crosbie successfully converted the resulting spot kick.
This spurred on the home side and they started the second half strongly, constantly posing a threat down the left side and almost getting in again. However, Corsham started to look dangerous on the counter and forced a series of dangerous corners and long throws.
On the 60-minute mark, manager Jamie Lyons made a couple of key changes. Rob Hobbs and Harrison Lee came off the bench to replace Jun and Bradon in midfield. This had an immediate effect on the game, with Corsham looking more comfortable in midfield. They also started to look more likely to score a third goal.
Shaq went close as his effort was superbly blocked following a pass from Plumber. From the resulting corner, Mark Cooper’s header was cleared off the line.
The match remained highly competitive, with Corsham receiving two more yellow cards. Rob Hobbs was cautioned for impeding a quick free kick, while Alfie Kelsey was deemed to be time-wasting.
With 15 minutes remaining, the home side started throwing everything at the Corsham goal. Alfie was needed again, pushing a shot around the post. Corsham, on the other hand, started to sit back and try to see out the game, while still looking to counter, Ethan Hill made a run down the right side and his low driven shot appeared to be heading towards the back of the net, but it rebounded off the inside of the post.
Ninety minutes were up, and it was Bath time as Ryan came off the bench for Plumber.
A lengthy period of injury time was added, which was further increased when a nasty collision between Shaq and the Mangos centre half resulted in a long delay as the home centre half received treatment. Thankfully, he was soon back on his feet and fully bandaged up, ready to continue.
Corsham controlled the last 5 minutes, eating up the clock, and were rewarded with all 3 points from a very tough encounter. The Mangos impressed with some talented young players and seem to be building a strong squad.
Man of the Match: Ethan Hill
